OBSERVATION

Inspiration for this project sparked in the summer. My parents often throw scraps outside to feed the crows, and they have a small family of them that visit. I would feed them myself, or sit and watch for a while. I broke out an old camera and started taking pictures. I took hundreds, and kept a couple dozen for reference. Here's just a few of the best ones

A COLOURFUL MURDER - 2017

A weakness of mine is that I can often dive right into projects without doing any drafting, thumbnails or even testing of the materials. This leads to me making a mistake after putting a lot of effort in, or not knowing where to go when halfway through and dropping it. I’ve been working on that in 2017 in particular, and this was the first big, carefully planned out project. I chose crows because I think they’re beautiful, even if they’re traditionally seen as mischievous or a symbol of crookedness. I tried to express their beauty through a rainbow of colours.

STUDY

I sketched, drew and painted a lot of birds (not just crows) over the summer. Eventually it led to the first two pieces practising the concepts of the project the silhouette in the trees, and the ink spatter

PLANNING

How big did I want it to be? How many paintings were going to be in this series? How would they be aligned? What colours would I use? I had an idea in mind and then I started making thumbnails to organise my thoughts. This led to a few sketches, a concept draft and a final draft

FINISHED!

I had actually picked up and put down this project over the course of a couple months. Because I had planned it out, it was easy to keep picking it up where I left off!
